About Hampton Roads Transit

Overview

Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is a regional system providing a variety of bus, commuter, and vanpool services within and between the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News, and Suffolk. Currently, HRT has over 800 employees and services a population of 1.3 million.

HRT also operates the NET -- Norfolk's free downtown electric circulator buses, various paratransit and dial-a-ride services and the Elizabeth River Ferry. In addition to these services, HRT is in the final design and early construction stages of a light rail transit system, The Tide. The Tide is a $232 million project proposed to extend 7.4 miles from the Eastern Virginia Medical Center through downtown Norfolk along the I-264 corridor to Newtown Road within the city of Norfolk. Eleven stations will be constructed along the alignment with four park and ride locations. The system is projected to carry up to 12,000 riders daily. HRT is funding the capital costs of the project in partnership with the Federal Transit Administration, Commonwealth of Virginia, and City of Norfolk. Governance

HRT was formed on October 1, 1999, following a merger between PENTRAN and Tidewater Regional Transit - the first voluntary merger of two transit agencies in the country. Presently, a seventeen-member Commission governs the transit agency.
